Dave Lewis
founder and Managing Director of senbarila,
graduated in the UK at Oxford University, where he gained a BA
(Hons) in Modern Languages (German and French). In July 2007 he was
admitted to the degree of MA (Oxon).
After a year's teaching and five years as a technical translator
at the Ministry of Defence in London, he moved to Germany to take
up a four-year post as interpreter and translator at the Joint
Services Liaison Office in Bonn. After a brief spell as a language
reviser
at the
German General Air Force Office in Cologne, he then joined the
Canadian Embassy in Bonn, where he worked for four years as interpreter
and translator at the highest levels of diplomatic relations.
In 1986 he moved to Munich to work in Languages Services at Siemens
AG, where he progressed to Regional Manager of IT Language Services
in Munich, with special responsibility for the newly emerging topic
of software localization. As one of the first practitioners in
this field, he was involved in the drafting of the Siemens Nixdorf
Internationalization Handbook,
and later
moved
on to hold regular seminars on software
localization at the
Sprachen & Dolmetscher
Institut (SDI) in Munich. Since October 2007 he has held a
position as tutor in usability at the SDI's newly founded University
of Applied Languages.
In 1994, he built on his experience in software
localization to become a specialist engineer and trainer in graphical
user interface (GUI) design and internationalization at Siemens
Information
and
Communication Networks (ICN) in Munich. His work here included
not only hands-on user interface design but also style guide authoring,
terminology management, tool development and GUI design training
for developers in Germany, Austria, France, India and the USA.
He established senbarila in
April 2003 to further develop the potential of designing barrier-free
user interfaces for today's international market.
Dave is married and has two sons, a daughter-in-law
and a grandson. He is an active musician, playing bass in several
Munich jazz and
rock
bands.
